Since acquiring a 27.7% stake in Manchester United in February 2024, INEOS has undertaken a series of workforce downsizing initiatives. The initial phase in the summer saw 250 employees made redundant and a subsequent round is poised to affect over 100 additional staff members across various departments. These decisions are part of a broader strategy to address the club’s financial challenges, including reported losses of approximately £300 million over the past three years. The Guardian

In a parallel move, INEOS announced the closure of Scotland’s sole oil refinery at Grangemouth, scheduled for mid-2025. This decision will result 400 redundancies, reducing the site’s workforce from 600 to 200 employees. The refinery, operational since the 1920s, has been deemed economically unviable due to sustained financial losses and an inability to compete with larger, more modern facilities globally. Reuters

When an organization in the UK plans to make redundancies, the procedures vary based on the number of employees affected:

For 20 to 99 redundancies: The employer must engage in a collective consultation process, initiating at least 30 days before the first dismissal. GOV.UK

For 100 or more redundancies: The collective consultation must begin at least 45 days prior to the first dismissal.GOV.UK

These consultations involve discussions with trade union representatives or elected employee representatives, aiming to explore ways to avoid or minimize redundancies and address their impacts.

To streamline the redundancy process and ensure compliance with legal requirements, employers can utilize specialized tools:

  • Automated Redundancy Calculator: This tool facilitates the calculation of statutory redundancy payments for numerous employees simultaneously, ensuring accuracy and efficiency.

  • Redundancy Selection Matrix: This system aids in objectively assessing and selecting employees for redundancy based on predefined criteria, promoting fairness and transparency in the decision-making process.

Implementing these tools can help organizations navigate the complexities of redundancy procedures while maintaining fairness and compliance with UK employment laws.
